Weekend in Mallorca

One great way to travel for cheap? Credit card rewards!

Last weekend we turned in our hard earned Chase Sapphire credit card points for a trip to Mallorca to celebrate our anniversary. We’d spent the majority of the summer in Germany & hadn’t been to the ocean, a lake, or even a pool the whole time. So we were feeling like we needed something to remind us it is still summer! Plus, with credit card points we could take a tropical weekend vacation on a budget. (We spent $55 for the flights & the hotel, combined!)

Once again, we didn’t really know what we were getting ourselves into. We’d seen pictures of the beach in Mallorca & that was enough to convince us to go. When we got there, we were a little shocked to find out that Mallorca is “The Cabo of Europe.” Think Spring Breakers. Not to mention, we stayed in the biggest party area of the island, Magaluf. Souvenir shops were selling shirts that said things like, “Good girls go to heaven, bad girls go to Magaluf.” That should give you an idea of what kind of place we were in. We’d be walking down the road & a dealer would walk right up to us to offer weed and/or coke. No joke. Coke! I mean, what the what??!

It was not exactly our scene.

As we walked down the beach on Saturday, we saw a giant wave pool with a body boarding competition going on. It was free to the public (at least we think!), so we hopped in the infinity pool that overlooked the competition & the beach and spent most of the day there. Who knew body boarding competitions in fake wave pools is a thing?! I mean, these guys were pros!

Regardless of the hotel parties going on in all the rooms around us, we had a really relaxing weekend. We ate at some great restaurants, devouring paella & sangria whenever we could because, you know, it’s Spain. We got massages on the beach, did some cliff jumping into the ocean, and just enjoyed the tropical weather. (Plus, we got to speak in Spanish. After a few months of German I never could have guessed how refreshing it would be to speak my 2nd language! After trying to learn a 3rd language, even your second language feels a little more like a security blanket.)

I'd highly recommend Mallorca to anyone looking for a getaway to the tropics, but I would be very careful with what area I recommend. Boy, am I glad to have checked it out for myself!

Check out some of the pictures below to see if this is somewhere you need to add to your bucket list.
